Albany, NY – Health Care for All New York (HCFANY), a statewide coalition of over 170 consumer advocacy organizations, expressed great relief at the decision by House Republican leadership to cancel today’s vote on the American Health Care Act (AHCA). HCFANY calls upon the majorities in both houses of Congress as well as the President to abandon their harmful efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and weaken the Medicaid program.

Cancelling this vote preserves quality, affordable health care for millions of New Yorkers through the New York State of Health marketplace, the Essential Plan, and Medicaid. The ACA allowed 2.7 million New Yorkers to get health insurance by revitalizing New York’s individual market, increasing the number of people eligible for Medicaid, and creating the Essential Plan. The Medicaid program provides affordable care to six million New Yorkers who cannot afford private insurance. Over a third of the New Yorkers covered by Medicaid are children, while most of the spending on the program provides care to the elderly and people with disabilities whose care costs more. The AHCA’s cap on Medicaid would have meant devastating cuts for New York’s most vulnerable.

HCFANY also commends the community organizers and members of the public who made their voices heard this week. Every single member of New York’s Congressional delegation heard from constituents in large numbers.
