The Crippling Weight of Health Care Costs on NY Families

Posted May, 12 2009 by arianne

A Families USA report released today,  Too Great A Burden: Americans Face Rising Health Care Costs indicates nearly one in four Americans under 65 will spend more than 10% of their family income on health care in 2009. Of these people, 82.6% have health insurance.

According to the report, in NY about 3 million insured NY families are  spending more than 10% of their gross family income on health care–about 1 million are paying over 25% of their gross family income.

The increase in premiums and copayments has contributed to the growing cost burden to NY families that have health insurance.  As employers struggle to provide coverage to employees, many are shifting costs to employees, who end up paying more and getting less coverage.
